Supporting 6+ GW across 300+ renewable and storage assets in power markets across North America

Why PJM Now

PJM is Poised to Become a Major BESS Market

PJM is the largest wholesale electricity market in North America, and capacity prices have reached historically elevated levels, driven by data center load growth, thermal retirements, and interconnection backlogs. Over 4 GW of BESS capacity is queued through PJM's Fast Lane process alone, with most assets targeting commercial operations between 2027 and 2029.

$333/MW-day
Record BRA Clearing Price
The 2027/28 Base Residual Auction cleared at the highest price in PJM's history, driven by data center load growth, thermal retirements, and constrained new supply entering the market.
4+ GW
BESS in the Fast Lane Queue
Over 4 GW of battery storage capacity holds interconnection agreements through PJM's Fast Lane process, with 60+ GW of BESS recently showing up in the IX queue.
~$60K/MW-yr
Capacity Revenue Potential
A 4-hour BESS asset with a 50% ELCC accreditation in PJM's Base Residual Auction can earn approximately $60,700 per MW per year from capacity revenue alone at current prices.

5 Questions to Ask Any PJM BESS Operator

The answers will tell you more about an operator's service model than any capabilities presentation.

1
Are you a registered PJM Market Participant?
Only registered Market Participants can represent assets in PJM's wholesale markets. Operators who use a third-party MP structure, or who are not registered at all, add complexity and counterparty risk that shows up in your asset's market access and revenue reliability.
2
Do you own and operate your own 24/7 NOC?
24/7 dispatch capability is a PJM operational requirement, not an option. Operators who outsource NOC functions or provide only business-hours coverage cannot meet PJM's continuous availability and dispatch standards, which directly affects capacity performance assessments and revenue.
3
How do you handle RPM compliance?
Accreditation errors directly reduce capacity revenue. Ask specifically how your operator manages CIR alignment and the annual UCAP filing calendar. A missed UCAP filing window means your asset operates at its prior accreditation value for the entire next delivery year regardless of its actual capability.
4
What does client data access look like?
Settlement transparency and real-time performance visibility are non-negotiable for assets reporting to lenders and investors. API-first access to your asset’s performance metrics should be standard.
5
Will you get a high level of customer service?
Scale without service quality is a liability. Having direct access to the person actually managing your asset, matters more than portfolio size alone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions about battery storage operations and market participation in PJM answered.

Every generating or storage resource participating in PJM's energy, capacity, or ancillary services markets must be represented by a registered Market Participant. Asset owners have three paths to market participation. First, they can register as a Market Participant themselves, a significant undertaking involving qualification, testing, financial assurance, and ongoing compliance obligations. Second, they can engage a third-party operator like SYSO who already holds Market Participant status and manages wholesale market participation, auction filings, and settlements on behalf of the asset. Third, asset owners who hold their own Market Participant registration can designate SYSO through a Declaration of Authority, a formal authorization that allows SYSO to submit capacity market offers, manage BRA filings, and handle RPM obligations on the asset owner's behalf without requiring a full transfer of market participant responsibilities. For most BESS developers and asset owners, the second or third path offers the fastest and most operationally efficient route to full PJM market participation.

PJM uses an Effective Load Carrying Capability (ELCC) methodology to accredit battery storage assets. ELCC determines how many megawatts of Unforced Capacity (UCAP) a BESS asset can offer into PJM's Base Residual Auction. ELCC values depend on the asset's duration class, historical performance data, and Capacity Interconnection Rights. Longer-duration assets, particularly those with four or more hours of storage receive higher ELCC accreditation, allowing them to offer more capacity into the BRA and earn higher capacity revenue.

UCAP stands for Unforced Capacity, the accredited capacity value that determines how many megawatts a BESS asset can offer into PJM's capacity market. UCAP is calculated by applying the asset's ELCC factor to its installed capacity. An asset with a 100 MW nameplate and a 50% ELCC would have a UCAP of 50 MW. Revenue in PJM's capacity market is paid on UCAP, so maximizing UCAP through accurate ELCC accreditation and CIR optimization directly increases capacity revenue.

PJMNet is PJM's private wide-area network connecting generation and storage assets to PJM's control centers. ICCP transmits real-time operational data between assets and PJM. Every BESS asset in PJM's wholesale markets requires validated ICCP telemetry to receive and respond to dispatch instructions, participate in capacity performance assessments, and settle accurately. SYSO operates a dedicated PJMNet ICCP infrastructure that new assets onboard onto, eliminating the months-long process of building and validating a standalone telemetry connection.

Battery storage assets in PJM can participate in five primary wholesale market revenue streams: capacity market revenue through the Base Residual Auction, day-ahead and real-time energy arbitrage based on locational marginal pricing, frequency regulation through the RegD market, and spinning and operating reserves. Maximizing total revenue requires co-optimizing across all four streams simultaneously, which is the core function of a qualified PJM BESS market operator.

Registration, telemetry validation, and accreditation filings all have their own lead times and submission windows. Operators who treat these as post-construction tasks typically add several months of non-earning time after physical completion. SYSO manages the full registration timeline in parallel with construction so clients are fully operational from day one.
