Supporting 6+ GW across 300+ renewable and storage assets in power markets across North America
In New York, the distributed opportunity is VDER
While New York's utility-scale renewable buildout has stalled, its distributed sector has outperformed, and the Value of Distributed Energy Resources program is a major reason why. VDER compensates sub-5 MW storage, solar, and hybrid assets for the actual value they deliver to the grid, by time and location, on top of a state mandate to deploy 6 GW of storage by 2030. Capturing that value depends on precise, around-the-clock operations.
New York's statewide storage mandate, including 3 GW of bulk storage procured through NYSERDA.
Distributed generation VDER has driven since inception, mostly community solar and, increasingly, storage.
New York City and Long Island carry the highest capacity value in the state, driven by persistent supply constraints.
Energy, ICAP, DRV, LSRV, and Environmental value, layered into one location-aware revenue stream.
Operations for every asset class in NYISO
Storage, solar, and hybrid projects each capture the VDER stack differently and face their own operating demands. Choose your technology to see how SYSO operates it in New York.
Five revenue components, one location-aware stack
Unlike net metering, VDER pays distributed assets for the tangible value they deliver to the grid, by time of day and by where they sit on the network. The stack rewards being in the right place, operating at the right hour.
Energy Value
Net injections settled at the NYISO day-ahead hourly zonal LBMP, creating arbitrage for storage that charges low and discharges high.
ICAP (Alt 3)
Settled on net injection during the single NYCA peak hour. Under Alt 3, full output is credited with no ELCC-based derate.
Demand Reduction
Compensates avoided distribution-capacity costs. Broadly available, with the rate locked at eligibility for 10 years.
System Relief
A premium for projects sited in utility-designated load-relief areas, also rate-locked for 10 years.
Environmental Value
A fixed REC-style payment for renewable and hybrid projects, locked for 25 years. Standalone storage is not eligible.
The SYSO advantage in New York
The VDER stack is only as valuable as the operations behind the asset. SYSO has run New York storage since 2023, and hit the NYCA peak every year since, so you don't have to build the forecasting, the control room, or the compliance yourself.
Operating in NY Since 2023
Years of hands-on VDER execution in the New York market, not a recent entrant learning the program on your asset.
Full ICAP Alt 3 Track Record
We have predicted and dispatched into every NYCA peak hour since 2023, securing full ICAP Alt 3 capacity value for every asset under management.
NYSERDA-Compliant 24/7 NOC
NYSERDA now requires VDER storage to sit under 24/7 NERC-CIP oversight. Our owned, always-staffed NOC meets that bar out of the box.
VDER + DLM Optimizer
Peak-prediction and reserved-capacity tooling that co-optimizes VDER against utility DLM events without eroding your Customer Baseline Load.
NYSERDA Bulk Storage & ISC Bids
Support for the Bulk Energy Storage Program: value-stack modeling, competitive Index Storage Credit bid packages, and NYISO registration.
Settlements & Compliance
Component-by-component VDER settlement verification, evolving PSC and NYSERDA compliance, and clear, API-first reporting for owners and lenders.
Frequently asked questions
High-level questions about NYISO, VDER, and how SYSO operates assets within them. For technology-specific detail, see the BESS, solar, and solar-plus-storage pages.
What is VDER, and how does it compensate my asset?
The Value of Distributed Energy Resources program is New York's successor to net metering, established by the PSC under Reforming the Energy Vision. Instead of tying payments to retail electricity value, VDER compensates distributed assets up to 5 MW for the actual value they deliver to the grid, by time of day and location. Compensation is layered across five components: Energy, ICAP (capacity), Demand Reduction Value, Locational System Relief Value, and Environmental value.
What is ICAP Alternative 3, and why does it matter for storage?
ICAP Alt 3 is the VDER capacity option available to standalone storage. It settles on the asset's net injection during the single NYCA peak hour, and critically applies no ELCC-based derate: an asset injecting at full output during the peak is credited on that full injection, unlike the marginal accreditation NYISO applies in its wholesale capacity market. That makes hitting the peak hour the operational event that sets the year's capacity value. SYSO has captured it for every VDER asset under management since 2023.
Where in New York is VDER value highest?
Value is site-specific, driven by zonal prices and substation-level factors. The premium markets are Zone J (New York City) and Zone K (Long Island), where persistent supply constraints and congestion push capacity prices highest. Zone F (the Capital region) and other upstate areas are emerging opportunities, with lower build costs and capacity prices expected to rise as thermal generation retires. Maximizing value takes multi-variable optimization across zone, utility, network, and interconnection constraints.
Does my VDER storage asset really need a 24/7 NOC?
Yes. NYSERDA's guidance requires VDER-eligible storage to be under 24/7 supervision by a NERC-CIP certified Network Operations Center, and pending NY fire code requires continuous monitoring of temperature, voltage, and state of charge. Beyond compliance, it's operationally necessary: many BESS assets have overnight charging restrictions, so a fault that goes unaddressed can leave the battery unable to reach full charge before a peak. SYSO's owned, always-staffed NOC covers both the compliance requirement and the revenue-critical readiness.
Can I participate in both VDER and NYSERDA's Bulk Storage program?
They target different asset sizes. VDER is for distributed projects up to 5 MW, while NYSERDA's Bulk Energy Storage Program procures resources of 5 MW or greater interconnected to NYISO, paying a fixed monthly Index Storage Credit tied to availability and the spread between your bid strike price and a reference price. SYSO supports both paths, modeling value stacks, preparing competitive ISC bids, and operating assets for availability, and can help you decide which fits your project's size, siting, and financing.
